“During the semester that I took a class on functional programming, James went above and beyond to make sure I understood many big ideas from the Haskell programming language. He has a way of breaking down complex ideas into digestible bits that are impenetrable to those new to the topic. I doubt he will face any issues in his future endeavours as a tutor.” – Honson Tran, Computer Science Student at Rutgers University, USA “James tutored me during a calculus module I took at university. He was able to explain difficult concepts such as differentiation and integration clearly and from multiple perspectives. He was very patient with me and I wouldn’t have reached my aims in this subject without his help.” – Toby Benson, Business Student at Swansea University, Wales
Encouraging and Effective KS2/KS3/KS4 Maths Tutor
> Who am I? Hi there, I’m James, a 24 year old Computer Science graduate, located in Birmingham. > What is my experience tutoring? Since graduating at the University of Bristol, I have tutored university students in Programming and Mathematics and subsequently worked with Tutor Doctor as a GCSE Maths tutor for 5 months. Here, I provided in-home, in-school and online tutoring sessions to several students each week, with diverse and varying abilities and difficulties in mathematics. In this time, I have constantly improved and adapted my teaching methods to suit different types of learners and to ensure that each of my students is challenged in the most effective ways to improve their understanding and ability each session. I have developed a comprehensive understanding of the GCSE Maths spec for the AQA, OCR and Edexcel exam boards and curated a broad range of learning materials and exercises for students of all abilities. While most of my experience is in tutoring at GCSE level, I am very capable of delivering effective sessions to those studying Maths and Further Maths at A-Level, as well as younger children in KS3. I am currently available for weekly tutoring of KS3/KS4 Maths students of all ages and abilities, to help you achieve your desired grade in your next examination or simply to ensure that you’re able to realize your potential in Mathematics. > What is my tutoring process? If you’re interested in my tutoring services, send me a message with any questions you might have, and let me know which time slots you’d ideally like to book for weekly sessions. I will respond the same day, and we can arrange a test session. If you’re pleased with the result, I will then provide sessions at the agreed time(s) each week, for as many weeks as is desired. Each session will focus on a particular topic from the curriculum the student is studying. These topics can be chosen by myself (based on difficulty, the student’s confidence, prevalence in the exam, and other factors). But students and parents are free (and encouraged) to request specific topics to be covered as well. Sessions will tend to be structured into the following chunks: Problem - The chosen topic is introduced via an intuitive explanation of the problem it solves. Examples - We investigate specific examples of this problem and work together to solve them using the newly introduced concepts and techniques. Exercises - The student is encouraged to tackle progressively more challenging exercises with minimal guidance from myself, based on the previous examples. Conclusion - We recap the material covered in the session, homework will be set (if desired), we will discuss how the student found the session, consider which topic to cover next session, etc.. > What’s online tutoring like? Using online whiteboard software such as Miro takes care of many issues usually posed by online tutoring. It allows us to work together through exercises since we can both see what the other person is writing and also allows us to import exercises and other teaching resources directly onto the whiteboard for annotation. This software, combined with a voice chat application makes the tutoring experience seamless when compared with face-to-face tutoring. Students only need a PC or Laptop with a USB or built-in microphone to make these online sessions very easy and practical.
